scrapbook sunday: b+w

I am still on my first cup of coffee and haven’t showered yet today, so there still is a weekend vibe happening here. My Sunday camera chats with MachoTurbo the last couple of weeks have been all over the map. Which are actually my favorite. Those days we range from shows and books that are on our radar, to what we’ve been shooting lately, and then on over to goals we have for the days ahead and where we see life taking us. Throw in some small jabs at each other, okay mostly just at me, and there you have it. Macho has always been a voice of reason in my life so it seems fitting that our common interest of photography has become another avenue where he can give me advise and help a sister out. So when he tells you to try shooting solely in black in white, damn it, you shoot in black and white. And you love it.

kitchen: sneak peek

Our kitchen update is nearly complete. We have a few small details left and then our beautiful kitchen will be finished. The reality of doing a project like this, like all the other home improvements we have done, is that life requires we still get paychecks, tend to little people and deal with anything else that needs our attention. So while doing this renovation (did I mention I also decided I was going to paint the rest of the living room and hallway), we are also potty training and dealing with school schedules and parent teacher conferences and still attempting to have a social life. While it would be much simpler to hire these projects out, it’s a really great feeling that we’ve done it all on our own. It’s a learning process and while our work isn’t perfect, it’s something we’ve put blood, sweat and tears into (literally all those things), to make our home just that. OUR HOME. It’s been incredibly inconvenient at times, but I wouldn’t trade all those makeshift floor dinners and messy rooms for anything.  Stay tuned because fingers crossed we’ll have all of this knocked out in the next couple weeks and we can show off all of our hard work. For now, here’s a peek.

Now let me chat for a second about my husband. He humored me and agreed to this big project knowing that he would take on most of the responsibility of it. All while cleaning up at night ,playing all the silly stuff with the kids AND helping me with laundry, cleaning, bus pick ups and all of life’s little chores. I know there are a thousand other things you want to do with your time home. Thank you’s just aren’t enough. Your one in a million. 🙂

renovation

This spring will mark five years that we’ve lived in our house. Majority of our home improvements have been landscape related. Which it just dawned on me that I never updated you on our work this summer, I’ll get on that one soon. Back to the house. We’ve painted rooms, and bathrooms. Bought new furniture and refinished the kitchen table. We’ve redecorated the kids’ rooms a few times and like any other lady you probably know, I’ve rearranged and redecorated the house more times than I can count.

But our focus (alright mostly mine) has been the kitchen. It might not be a dream kitchen but it’s still the place I spend the most time in and it holds the most memories for me. It’s sentimental and also telling that I’m a real fat kid at heart. Since moving in we’ve changed out the faucet, added hardware to the cupboards and drawers, built extra shelving, put lighting in above the cabinets and now.. drum roll please……

are doing some tile work and painting!

Our Friday night was spent prepping by moving out the stove and fridge and dumping most everything else on the dining room table and shoving it all onto one side of the room. We washed, sanded and primed walls and cleared out space to start the job the next morning. We had a few set backs but so far have had a really great jump on it.** Here’s a sneak peek and stayed tuned for the finished product!

scrapbook sunday : film edition

I recently had our couple rolls of film developed and just got back the goods. I was pleasantly surprised by what arrived. While I knew I was going to get far less than perfect photos, I was so happy to see that quite a few turned out. Hayden’s roll is my favorite of the two. In all honesty, her roll turned out much better than mine in that even her blurry photos tell me a story. I love her artistry and view on life. Take a peek:

Here are a few from my roll. Included is a very unfocused, blurry shot of Hayden. I absolutely love it. Which is one of the many reasons I’m drawn so much to photography.  Seeing that photo instantly brought me back to those years she was still just a toddler. I   briefly had forgotten when she was so little. But in all her fuzziness, you can still make out that beautiful smile, and the way her eyes light up when she’s happy. She was such a goofball then and still is a ball of joy and silliness.  It doesn’t need to be a clean clear shot for it to make my heart so full.

will commute, for pizza

Now that Hayden has started school, we have become like the majority and are Monday thru Friday’ers. Alarm clocks are turned off Friday night and the kids get to blow blast that early bedtime and stay up a bit longer for movies and popcorn. Saturday and Sunday mornings are reserved for sleeping in and loading up on pancakes and extra cups of fresh coffee.

This past weekend was no different. Full on biscuits and gravy with no agenda for the day, we started to spit fire ideas of what to fill our time with. Among those ideas was a roadtrip and pizza. How about a roadtrip to eat pizza?!

We loaded up some small essentials, topped off the car with gas and was Talkeetna bound.  You might recall that I’ve done posts in the past about this tiny little town. It really is one of our favorite spots.

trees-0154

While it’s not as bustling as it is in the summer, the few main spots are open and the one that serves the most delicious pizza, was open and ready for us. Their signature pizza, the Mountain High Pie, barely resembles a slice of pizza because it’s so loaded with toppings. Just writing about it is making my mouth water.

The dinner rush picked up and the kids and I slipped out while Andy finished up with the check. While there may not have been shops and stores to explore, there was plenty of adventure waiting along those quiet streets. Hayden was set on finding a park to play at, and Reid is always on board for whatever comes his way.

Our short walk through the streets wrapped up, the kids loaded up, and it was one last pit stop at the brewery on the way out of town. As their eyes were getting heavy in the backseat, we spotted a park and pulled around to surprise them with one last run before the drive home. Even though the air was starting to chill and the sunshine had left us, a trip to a park is never disappointing.

These spur of the moment, load the family up and go here, sort of plans are special. They have become even more special now that we only have a handful of days in the month that we have this kind of freedom. While it was nice to have flexibility with our days and no obligations in years past, if this is what schedules and routines looks like, I’ll keep it.

scrapbook sunday: thirty two

Lately. Scratch that. For some time now, I’ve been at a loss for words. I started this blog as a way to connect with family and friends. That evolved into posting the occasional recipe and sharing thoughts and projects that interested me. I dove into photography somewhere in the process and my interest for writing about this and that dwindled. Not that our daily life isn’t exciting or worth writing about. A combination of not having the motivation to write and not having an artistic connection with it, means that this blog has progressively gotten silent.

Ask my husband or my children though, and they will tell you I’m always taking pictures. It gives me a voice without speaking, and that has become my niche. I can stay behind the scenes and tell you about our lives without ever really having to tell you. Staring at this computer screen and doing my best to come up with the right words I imagine will soon become a thing of the past and you can simply glance through these posts and come to your own understanding of what life for us entails.

I take pictures to please no one other than myself. My friends and my family benefit from my hobby which gives it meaning and purpose and brings me much satisfaction. I don’t expect likes or comments. I don’t do it for money. I don’t expect this to evolve into a career someday. I take pictures to tell a story. A story of my children. A story of our life being built in Alaska. A story of a beautiful love. A story that isn’t perfect, not always pretty, and is simply just real life. My life. A life where I’m constantly striving to learn from my mistakes. Which is what makes photography so desirable to me. I’m never going to be the best at it, but I can sure as hell try and be the very best that I’m capable of. Just like life.

I’ve yet to discover my “style”. I’m beginning to accept that I might never find it. But I’m told somewhere in this mess it exists, so I’m going to keep being messy and wait to see if it reveals itself someday.

A few months ago I picked up an old film camera while thrifting and have slowly been easing it into my shooting. I found that it’s something Hayden can participate in and she recently took it with us on a day trip, finishing up a roll of film I had just started. It was sent off for processing along with a roll of film that was started three years ago with a different camera from my very small collection. I’m sure you will be eagerly awaiting those shots just like me, so to pass the time, check out someone that actually knows what they are doing. If you aren’t already following machoturbo than you should be. He recently joined me in the scrapbook sunday series and this weeks edition of film is inspiring and humbling. He is surely one to watch.

This nugget turns two today.

He runs faster than you would expect from most two year olds, let alone one that is short and has some real meat on his bones.

He lives to be outside. He wakes up and puts his shoes on and most nights we peel his shoes off with a fight in order to get him ready for bed.

His teeth are really spaced apart and his front two are no where near being lined up and are different lengths. Making him have a mouth of crocodile teeth, and I just LOVE it.

He picks on his sister often but loves her fiercely. He cries for her when she’s gone and screams with joy when she shows back up. They take all their baths together and have recently started bunking together at night. I know he’ll miss her immensely when she starts school.

While he’s always quick to love on his mama, he’s a daddy’s boy. I’m basically chopped liver when Andy is home from work.

He loves anything with wheels or that he can drive. He spends hours playing with his cars and trucks and has no fear when it comes to riding a bike. He cries every day to ride on the motorcycle and will spend an entire afternoon riding his four wheeler around the yard and going to visit the neighbors.

He just recently started showing interest in using a lot of words. He doesn’t have a lot of drive to learn letters, numbers or the correct name of something. But he is fascinated with the mechanics of anything. He will stay occupied taking apart and reassembling something over sitting for a book or learning colors.

He is without question all BOY. He is always instantly covered in dirt and can’t stay clean to save his life. He destroys all his clothes and is the messiest eater. He makes motor sounds with everything and climbs and scales anything he can get to. Yet he can’t go anywhere without his blanket and we’ve struggled with breaking him of his pacifier and bottle.

On any given day he could probably eat an entire rotisserie chicken.

The kid is obsessed with bananas. When we buy them at the store we have to either hide them in the cart or wait to get them last because he’ll cry until we pay for them. I can’t remember a grocery trip with him where we left the store without him eating at least one before we got back to the car.

I really thought his hair would have darkened by now, but it just keeps getting lighter. It just might reach white one of these days. Maybe he’s actually a wizard…

He has a toddler bed and does great sleeping on his own. Though most nights he wakes up and ends up sneaking into our bed or snuggling with Hayden where ever she is.

He loves our neighbors and visits them every day. He goes over to say hi to “auntie and papa” any chance he gets and “E!” is greeted with so much excitement from him every time he comes to play.

He loves milk, his grandpa and getting suckers from the neighbors. He puts Sharky’s dog food in his water bowl whenever we aren’t looking and has had more black eyes in the last year than I’ve had in my entire life. He’s just as likely to play dolls with his sister as he in to play in the dirt.

He can be the biggest stinker and sweetest boy all in one day. He is the greatest sidekick and makes life so adventurous. From the moment he was conceived to the day we welcomed him he has brought so much joy into our life. It’s a blessing to watch him grow and I’m so incredibly thankful that Hayden has a brother who has such a deep, compassionate love for her. I know that he’ll grow up to be her biggest protector. He sets out to make every one laugh and smile and it makes it so easy to be around him and take him anywhere. We look forward to every moment spent with him and hope he grows up knowing that he is loved so very much.

Happy birthday sweet boy.. You are our world.

a change of seasons

carrots-0481reid-0477

Today is one of those perfect autumn days. We woke up to sunshine streaming through the windows and the morning breeze creeping through the trees. Sweeping the golden leaves off with it and spreading them gently along the driveway and across the yard.

Before Hayden was even out of bed, her neighborhood friends were pounding at the front door asking to play. Which led to them peeking in her window and yelling for her to wake up and join them outside. Both kids scurried to get dressed and eat something, not able to get out the door fast enough to be with them.

I finished my morning coffee outside and harvested the last of the carrots. Having a counter top already covered with zucchini, I picked three more off my plants and delivered them to the neighbor. Hayden bounced between houses in the culdesac with her friends and Reid not being able to keep up, was content to chase the dogs and ride his four wheeler.

It’s the time of year where we try to take full advantage of days that don’t rain because before we know it, the snow will start falling and we won’t be as eager to head outside. Yard work is coming to a halt and my garden is on its last leg. Most of my early season flowers have withered away and an occasional mowing is all the lawn gets anymore. Hayden only has a week left of her summer before school starts and in the last few days we have tried to pack in some really fun stuff with her. Including a back yard camping trip. Weinee roasting and s’mores, four wheeler and motorcycle rides around the neighborhood, and brushing our teeth by the campfire made it actually seem like a legit camping trip and I found waking up in my back yard with the pleasure of using my own bathroom was actually the kind of camping I’d be willing to do more of. Plus, the kids had a blast and cleanup was far easier that having to cram all your dirty camp gear back in its bags and in the car.

ride-0348tent-0402

Our leisure mornings of pancakes and friends to play with are numbered. Monday marks the beginning of the school year and we won’t have the luxury of sleeping in during the week with no agenda for the day. Late breakfasts and cartoons will be reserved for weekends and days that we can stay in our pajamas all day and color will have to wait until summer time.

draw-0836drawing-0850

Alarm clocks and schedules are in the near future. But until then we are going to embrace the seasons changing and spend our days like today. Outside loving this gorgeous autumn day. Without a single place to be.

progression

At the beginning of the year I posted a few pictures of the northern lights. They were out of focus and grainy and not at all resembling anything I was actually trying to capture with my camera. Yet it was a breakthrough for me. It was a step in the right direction.

Now several months later and I’m not only going in the right direction, I’ve made it over a hurdle, somewhat gracefully.

I’m still searching for my voice when it comes to my photography. Taking pictures of my kids has become second nature and nice pictures in my backyard at that golden hour has become monotonous.

Black and white street photography really appeals to me. In general, I’ve always been drawn to black and white. It captures an incredibly raw moment. You aren’t boggled with filters and saturated colors. I tend to pay attention to the feelings and emotions of a person rather than anything else in the picture when color is eliminated. With that being said, black and white I can manage. Street photography? Not so much.

My brother in law (who takes amazing pictures) and I, have monthly “camera chats”. We talk about any camera questions I might have, what we’ve been shooting lately and a lot of times it’s just the both of us talking about what we want out of our pictures. One thing he’s mentioned on several occasions is striving to take a photo that tells a story. You can take a picture of a girl sitting down, hair pulled back, smile on her face, she says cheese  and it can be a beautiful photo. And then you can take her picture when she’s bent down. She’s tying her shoe and trying so very hard to get it right this time. She has her tongue sticking out as she’s concentrating and trying to remember which way to loop it. Her face is calm and determined and now your still moment has a story behind it. That is what I’m after. And it’s really hard. Street photography is an art in itself and I’m really struggling with it. It requires practice and patience and being able to think quick on your feet to get the shot your after. All of that, with a little bit of luck, and good timing.

Last weekend there was an air show. A perfect place to get some practice in. We left around noon and by the time we got to the exit for it, it was SLAMMED. I mean traffic backed up on the highway and in all directions heading to the show. We made an attempt and with antsy, hungry kids in the car we decided we would skip the show and head somewhere for lunch. The grand finale with all the big jets started at 4 and after lunch we happened to find a park right next to the base where the show took place. The kids got to run around and play and we all sat back to watch the jets soar across the sky. It was here that I got this shot.

boys-0245

With a first glimpse, it doesn’t seem like anything special. But when you start to examine it, you see each person is part of an unfolding story. I had been sitting there long enough to see it all come together. The woman has her son on her lap. They were first on the swings. He didn’t want to swing by himself so she sat down and pulled him up on her lap and they started swinging together, laughing. The boy in the corner is mad and watching the other boys playing, refusing to join in. He had originally been with the boy in front, throwing the ball, and they had their own game going with the basketball. A couple more boys showed up and crashed the game, and he got left behind when his friend left him and began to play the new game with the other boys. He made his way to the side and sulked while the fun continued on without him.

Just like with my out of focus, grainy shots before, it’s not a perfect photo. But it’s a picture I’m extremely proud of and one I personally really love. It started out as something small. A shot of a couple boys throwing a basketball. The end result was a story of love. The love of your friend. The love for your children. The love of being young, and the love of doing things that make you feel good.

And that’s all taking pictures is really about for me. Doing something that makes me feel good and creating forever moments.

garden fresh

Majority of my news feed is filled with my friends and family sharing how they are keeping cool in the scorching summer heat. Pool parties, beach days, AC running non stop, ice cream, popsicles, and refreshing cocktails.

Those of us that live in Alaska however, are slowly mixing sweatshirts and rain boots back into our wardrobe, prepping for children to go back to school and watching as summer activities are simmering down. July has been packed full of BBQs, lake days, fireworks, kayak trips, SO MUCH FOOD, and out of state family visitors. We had days so hot it was unreal, and days it rained so hard the only thing to do was bundle up and watch movies. But the best part about summer’s end is that the star players in the garden are ready to harvest. The greenhouse has tomato plants that are to the roof, plum full of tomatoes starting to ripen. We’ve eaten a handful of cucumbers already, with its vines heavy with more. Snap peas, lettuce, green onions and strawberries have been at our disposal all summer and now my counter tops are filled up daily with these beauties.

zucchini-0679

For months now, I’ve listened to the groans of the kids, asking when the carrots could be eaten. So now that we have a bag in the fridge, ready for anytime snacking, they can stop asking me 47 times a day about them.

carrot-0682

There is only so much zucchini bread you can make before you draw a line. Baking with any certain ingredient is always what first comes to mind for me, so I’ve made it a goal to incorporate my home grown produce into as many meals as I can and try out new recipes.

The last two nights I have gorged myself on this “pasta” dish. Eaten every last bit and practically slurped the sauce out of the bowl. ( I even made extra sauce to freeze)

dish-0804

Zucchini, carrots, green onions and cilantro from our garden made this easy dish a home run. Being an incredibly guilt free healthy dinner meant I could have an extra glass, or two three, of wine. And a brownie. With ice cream.  It’s all about balance people.

Try it for yourselves and thank me later.

Good luck to my friends enduring the heat. I’m off to grab a sweater, it’s chilly in here.
